Chris Windom wins USAC Silver Crown championship with Eldora race victory

Sep 26, 2016
(September 26, 2016) – Chris Windom, of Canton, Ill., scored his first USAC national championship Saturday night, erasing a 10-point deficit in the point standings to clinch the USAC Silver Crown championship with a victory in the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway.
Windom qualified second in his No. 98 RPM/Fred Gormly entry and led all 50 laps of the feature race at the historic half-mile dirt track. The dominant showing crested when he nearly lapped up to third place until a late caution flag with 14 laps to go.
The victory was Windom’s second Silver Crown score of 2016. He captured the checkered flag earlier this month at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois.
The 25-year-old Windom joins an illustrious list of former Silver Crown division champions that includes Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Ryan Newman and Ken Schrader.
