Chris Windom Scores Sprint Car Win at Lawrenceburg

Jun 18, 2014

CORNELIUS, N.C. (June 18, 2014) - 23-year-old racecar driver Chris Windom, driving for car owner Jeff Walker, scored his first major victory of the 2014 racing season Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway, leading the final 20 laps of the 25-lap feature race in the track's vaunted Chevrolet Sprints division.

Windom, a regular in USAC's three major racing divisions, finished second in his heat race and started from the pole in the feature. After overtaking leader Kevin Thomas, he withstood attempted slide jobs for the lead, holding off the likes of Dave Darland and Justin Grant for the win.

"I definitely think we put on a good show for the fans," said Windom, who has encountered some bad luck this year, including an engine failure earlier in the week during the USAC TRAXXAS Silver Crown Series race at Gateway International Raceway in Illinois. "It was good to finally break through with a win. We had a great car."

It was his first victory since scoring a Silver Crown win at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio last September. The 2013 Silver Crown Rookie of the Year, Windom is a former winner of the Perris Oval Nationals in California and the Little 500 in Anderson, Ind.

Windom is also transitioning to Stock Car racing via the ARCA Series. He has four finishes of eighth or better in six career ARCA starts, including a third-place finish at the Du Quoin Fairgrounds in Illinois.
