Kyle Benjamin Voted No. 1 in Speed51.com Short Track Draft

May 08, 2013

CORNELIUS, N.C. (May 8, 2013)– 15-year-old Kyle Benjamin was named the “number one pick” in the 2013 version of Speed51.com’s short track draft Tuesday evening. The draft, a brainchild of SPEED reporter and Speed51.com founder Bob Dillner, annually ranks the top 51 young racecar drivers competing in America’s grassroots racing divisions.

The rankings are a collection of votes compiled from short track reporters and analysts and marquee industry names. 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski was one of many that made Benjamin his top choice.

The selection comes on the heels of Benjamin’s runner-up finish in this weekend’s ARCA/CRA Super Series race at Anderson Speedway. It was his first Super Late Model race visit to the high-banked quarter-mile oval.

Benjamin started second and averaged a second-place running position in the 125-lap race. A calculated charge for the lead didn’t pan out after making contact with the leader in the race’s closing laps, but the result padded what has become a sterling season-long average.

Of Benjamin’s 12 Super Late Model races this season, six resulted in victory and four were runner-up finishes. He has averaged a 3.5-place finish in completed races versus nationally recognized competition.

His next race will be the ARCA Series event at the Toledo Speedway on May 19.

Benjamin, on being named Speed51.com’s number one pick…“This is really awesome. I’ve read the draft every year, even before I started racing Late Models. I never imagined I’d be a top-five pick, much less the first one. For me personally, it’s really cool.”

Benjamin, on finishing second at Anderson…“We had a really good racecar and with 20 laps to go, I picked up the pace. If I was going to win, it was going to come from the outside groove. When the opportunity to pass was there, I went to that groove. The leader blocked it off, got into me and put me into the wall. That was it. I hate I couldn’t bring the win home for my team, but it was a good run.”
