Windom wins USAC National Feature at Big Diamond

Jun 20, 2012

CORNELIUS, N.C. (June 12, 2012) - 21-year-old Chris Windom led flag to flag for 30 laps, holding off former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Tracy Hines to score his first win of the 2012 AmsOil USAC National Sprint Car Series season this weekend at Big Diamond Speedway (PA).

"I knew I wanted to get the jump and get out in the lead at the start," said Windom. "I just tried to run as hard as I could, but I had to get a little conservative with the lapped cars toward the end. I was afraid they might push me up or off the backstretch. I've got to thank (car owner) Kenny (Baldwin) and Derek (Claxton). They gave me a good race car tonight, and we won."

For Windom, who is also transitioning to pavement Stock Car racing via the ARCA Series, it was his second victory at Big Diamond - he won his first ever USAC Sprint Car feature there in 2010 - adding to a growing list of open-wheel racing accomplishments that includes wins in the Perris Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway (CA) and the Little 500 at Anderson Speedway (IN). He won four USAC National Sprint Car features in 2011.

Windom has two top-10 finishes in three career ARCA starts, including a third-place finish at the Du Quoin Fairgrounds (IL) last year.

Indiana Midget Week, a stretch of five races in five days for the Mopar USAC National Midgets Series, starts Wednesday for the Canton, Illinois native.
